A.R Rahman-The Journey Home-Bombay Dreams(Sarah Brightman Version)
There are some musical themes in films that create a tremendous impact and stay on with you for your entire life. “The God father”, “James Bond” films, “The exorcist”, to name a few in English and “Sindhubharavi”, “Taal” to name some in our own Indian languages. The “Taal” theme is mesmerising, romantic and addictive. The same theme found space in A.R.R’s “The Journey Home” from “Bombay Dreams”. I have used the “Sarah Brightman” (The Phantom of the Opera fame) modified version from her album “Harem” as that was the karaoke availabe. I had to increase the scale by 5 semitones to suit my range.
Song: The Journey Home
Music: A.R Rahman
Original Song from: The Bombay Dreams Musical (2003)
Adapted version by: Sarah Brightman from the Album Harem (2003)
Lyrics: Don Black and A.R rahman

Ghar Chale Aao…….Saawariya
The journey home is never too long
Your heart arrives before the train
The journey home is never too long
Some yesterdays always remain
I’m going back to where my heart was light
When my pillow was a ship, I sailed through the night
The journey home is never too long
When open arms are waiting there
The journey home is never too long
There’s room to love and room to spare
I want to feel the way that I did then
I think my wishes through before I wish again
Not every boat you come across is one you have to take
Now, sometimes standing still can be the best move you ever make
Aaja Saawariya…………
The journey home is never too long
Home hopes to heal the deepest pain
The journey home is never too long
Your heart arrives before the train
Oo…. Saawariya…………

Gopangane-Bharatham-Raveendran

Here is a song with another awesome singer Rashmi Nair! Rashmi has a beautiful voice and sings classical oriented songs amazingly well and has an impeccable sense of pitching and voice control! Well I should say that I am really floored by her supportive vocals which can be any music director’s delight! Again, no EQ…. no correction whatsoever on her raw vocals in any respect! Bang on target! Just with the reverb effect!
This is one of Raveendran master’s toughest compositions (all of his compositions are a challenge to the singer). All the songs of Bharatham were classics and will stand the test of time.
Song: Gopangane
Film: Bharatham
Music: Raveendran
Lyrics: Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri
Original Singers: K.J Yesudas & K.S Chitra
Covered by: Rashmi Nair & Pradip Somasundaran

Lukka Chuppi-Rang De Basanti-Lata Mangeshkar-A.R Rahman (With Kuhoo Gupta)

Well I have roped in the Koel who sings kuhoo……kuhoo in muziboo for this song:) Kuhoo’s parents might have known in advance that she was to have a voice as sweet as the Koel. Well when she accepted my request and sent me her file, I was spellbound! A beautiful voice with clear diction, expression, and spot on pitching is what makes Kuhoo special! And she does remind you of Lataji in her younger days! I never had to correct the pitch or even EQ her voice at any place! It’s just as she has sung, just with the reverb effect.
And what a composition by A.R Rahman sung with moving emotion and grace by the then 77 year old Lata Didi! She can still move mountains with her voice alone……This song has made me cry literally every time I hear it!
Prasoon Joshi’s words are simple but striking and A.R R has masterly sung the male portions himself with his distinctive rustic voice.
Song: Lukka Chuppi
Film: Rang De Basanti (2006)
Singers: Lata Mangeshkar and A.R Rahman
Music: A.R Rahman
Lyrics: Prasoon Joshi

Picha Vacha Naal Muthalkku Nee-Puthiya Mukham

This song without any doubt been the most popular hit of 2009 among Malayalam films released so far. And this is the only song that’s hearable in the film “Puthiya Mukham”. This is invariably one of the very best songs composed by “Deepak Dev” so far in his career. He has not done a film for almost 2-3 years in Malayalam and it has been a great comeback for him with this song. Though the song is very popular the debate to whether “Shanker Mahadevan” was the right choice to sing this song, considering the fact that there was much to be desired regarding his pronunciation will go on. There is also doubt on to whether this was technically one of the best songs that Shanker has sung. Barring the above mentioned doubts, I believe that Shanker has done a fabulous job on expressions, and this song carries itself through sheer melodic but simple arrangements that Deepak has used throughout. The song has simple but meaningful and musically beautiful words woven into it.
This is my version of the song. I have sung it in my own way with some minor variations but largely within the mood of the song.

Mayilirahe Mayilirahe….(A.R Rahman) from Anbe Aaruyire (Ah Aah)……

Posting a Tamil song after a long long time……
I believe that this is one of the best songs ever composed by AR Rahman and my heart breaks when I see the video and the whole film in which it came. The film was a disaster at the box office and those who saw it would know why it was so. It was hopeless. It’s a shame that such a gem of a song went wasted for such a mediocre film. The song video had S.J Surya, actor, director….etc. in a blue “Lungi” doing some funny steps with a very beautiful damsel who was wasted in the film. If this song was shot with an apt video it would have been another story! Anyway, one of ARR’s best of best! The beautiful bells keep on tinkling in this song and what a voice Madhushree has! Reminds me of the other golden voice Sadhana Sargam, whom he uses quite often in his songs. Naresh Iyer glides effortlessly with his silky voice which suddenly transforms to all power at the higher notes.
Song: Mayilirahe
Film: Anbe Aaruyire (Ah Aah)
Music A.R Rahman
Lyrics: Vaali
Original Singers: Naresh Iyer and Madhushree
Covered by: Meera Manohar and Pradip Somasundaran
