Music director Ravindran who departed us recently and left a huge vacuum in Malayalam
Film Music was the first one who discovered my singing talents and encouraged me
to sing in films. It is no surprise that I sang many songs for him and most of
them were my best! Maybe he was the only one who understood my talents and also
knew that I could sing classical based songs. That was why my very first
recorded film song "Samayam Manoharam" based on the raga Kamboji which
was to be recorded in the voice of none other than "Ganagandharvan
Yesudas" luckily came out in my voice. I had in fact been called upon to
sing the track for the song! Such was his benevolence and confidence in people
who could really sing.
"Meri Awaz
Suno" and winning the "Lata Mangeshkar Trophy" for the
best male singer in 1996 would remain the best musical moment of my life. Those
winning moments where my singing talents were acknowledged and heard by the
great stalwarts of Indian music, Lata Mangeshkar, Pandit Jasraj, Mannadey,
Bhupen Hazarika and all of the Hindi Film industry, were simply out of this
world! Sunidhi Chauhan who won the best female singer award is now one of the
leading playback singers in Bollywood!
My classical (carnatic) singing has evolved under the able guidance of my Guru Shri. V Gopalan (Trichur), under whom I started learning in 1984. I also gained a lot of knowledge in short spans under Smt. Geetha Rani (Trichur), Satyavada Sisters (Vizag), Late Shri. Tirupati Ramanuja Suri (Vizag), Shri. Kannan (Coimbatore) and Vairamangalam Laxminarayana (Chennai).
Some of the
unforgettable moments of my journey so far, in music are presented
here.
