Teri Duniya Se-Pavitra Paapi-Another gem from Kishore

After a long gap am here again with a Kishoreda song. Ever since I heard this song in my College days, it has been one of my all time favourites. It's definitely one of Kishoreda's best songs in the sentimental category. His soulful sonorous voice has so much of depth and emotion in it. I have tried my best to do justice to this beautiful composition from Prem Dhawan which came out in 1970.
Song: Teri Duniya Se

Dil Aisa Kissine Mera Toda...Another Kishore Kumar Gem!

Well I would never forget this song in my whole life as it was the beginning to every amazing thing that happened afterwords in my musical career! This was the first song that I sang for "Meri Awaz Suno". I still remember that day when the hall was filled with aspirants all over from India. As I was the only one who was from the south, I was all at sea listening to the tall stories of my fellow participants about singing track for big singers like Udit Narayan, Abhijeet, Kumar Sanu...etc. All of them were already doing rounds of recording in the studios of Bollywood and here was me, a southie...who had come to beat them all and that too singing hindi! Well I was at times wondering why I had traveled the whole way on a plane to Mumbai in the first place. And then suddenly my name was called out of nowhere! As I went on to the makeshift stage, I found myself confronted by two great personalities in front of me! One was "Sanjeev Kohli", son of the legendary music director "Madan Mohan". The other was "Pamela Chopra" Yash Chopra's wife! They were the judges of the audition rounds! I somehow finished my song "Dil Aisa Kissine Mera" and after I had done with it, I was almost sure that I was going to be out in the audition round itself! The enormity of the occasion had taken its toll on my confidence and I could not even do 50% justice to what I sang. And as I had presumed, I was not selected, and had to go back to my relative's home where I was staying. Once it was over, I was free from all tension and as I was preparing my mind for the long journey by train the next day back to Kerala, the phone bell rang! "I am calling from YASHRAJ FILMS. Can I have Mr. Pradeep Somasundaram on the phone?" A sweet female voice spoke. My relative gave the phone to me. "Sir, we would like to hear your voice once more as we are yet to finalise the last person in the final 14 for the next round. Could you come over?". She said. I could not believe what I heard!
Now, I had no fear at all and thought...what do I have to lose?...let me just go there and do my best this time... "See Mr. Somasundaram...Mrs. Chopra wanted me to hear your voice again as she felt that there was something in you..that we missed...so we called you" "Mr. Kohli said. This time I sang "Dil Aisa" with my heart out! And they said "Mr. Somasundaram...is this really you? Our doubt has been justified! We thought you did not sing well last time due to tension...and see how well you did it this time! We would have lost a good contestant!". And finally I was in the final 14 as the last man at the last minute! The rest of the story and the climax is history, on how a "Manush" became "Amanush" in just 10 days of time! Strange are the ways of fate!

Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas Tum Rehti Ho......

Well this song would surely be the favourite of many music lovers! I had lot of requests for this song and was finally able to get hold of an awesome sounding karaoke track for it almost close to the original. Those who have seen Blackmail would never ever forget this melodious song starring Rakhee & Dharmendra. This was yet another memorable hit from the Kalyanji-Anandji duo. I know that I can never ever be anyway near the magnetic magical voice of Kishoreda but we mortals just try to satisfy ourselves by trying to sing such songs to the best of our abilities. I would just term it passion than anything else! It's just a humble gesture to show that we still hold these songs in our heart of hearts!

Song: Pal Pal Dilke Paas
Film: Blackmail
Original Singer: Kishore Kumar

Khilte Hain Gul Yahan: Another Kishore Kumar-S.D Burman Gem!

Sachin Dev Burman was born in Comilla, Bengal (now in Bangladesh) in British India. He was born in the royal family of Tripura, and began his training in classical music under his father, sitarist and Dhrupad singer Nabadwipchandra Dev Burman. He later continued his training first under KC Dey, and then Bhismadev Chattopadhaya and Badal Khan. He also acknowledges Ustad Allauddin Khan as one of his gurus. In the early 1930s he made a reputation for himself as a singer of folk and light classical music. (Consequently his film compositions were often influenced by his huge repertory of folk-tunes from the Bengali, Bhatiali, Sari and Dhamail traditions of the North-East India).
He made his film debut singing in Yahudi ki Ladki (1933) but the songs were scrapped and re-sung by Pahari Sanyal. His first film as a singer was finally Sanjher Pidim (1935). He became a music director initially in Calcutta with Rajgee (1937). He moved to Bombay in 1944.
S.D Burman composed music for 100 movies inclusive of Bengalee films. Agneepath (1990) had an uncredited song composed by him - Nazar lagi raja tore bangle par from Kalapani (1958). He also sang about 20 film songs (inclusive of Bengali films) for which he composed music though he may not have been the music director of the films. He also sang for one of the songs of Amar Prem (1971), a film whose music was composed by his son, Rahul Dev Burman. S.D. Burman's compositions have been mainly sung to a large extent by the likes of Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, Geeta Dutt (wife of Guru Dutt and a playback singer herself), Manna Dey,Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and Shamsad Begum. Mukesh and Talat Mahmood have also sung songs composed by him. He has also sung a number of private songs and bhajans. Notable ones being "Dheere se jana bagiyan mein" and "Kaun nagariya javun re Bansiwale..".
Sharmilee was another feather on S.D Burman's cap in 1970's. The film was a big hit and the songs were captivating. It also had the young charm of Shashi Kapoor and Rakhee to add to it's success!
I attempt the evergreen song "Khilte Hain Gul Yahan" from the film. This song has long been on my request list and the karaoke track was given to me by Mr. Swaran Dhaliwal from Canada. I thank him and would like to add that this karaoke track is one of the best I have heard and feels almost near to the original!
