അമ്മമഴക്കാറിനു-മാടമ്പി-യേശുദാസിന്റെ ശബ്ദഗാംഭീര്യം ഇന്നും നിറഞ്ഞു നില്ക്കുന്നു....

Some songs belong to the singers who sing them. You can never ever imagine any other singer singing such songs. "Amma Mazhakkarinu" from "Maadambi", the "Mohanlal" starer and a big hit of 2008, belongs to this category. This song demands the depth and range of a voice that's unique. And that voice can only be of Dr. K.J Yesudas! When his song plays in the Theatre, all the other singers of the film vanish into oblivion ! Such is the sheer magic his heavy, soulful voice casts over us. His is the only voice that we never get tired of listening again and again and again. It is the perfect voice! It has aged over the years, but magnificence, splendour and total command has taken over from youthful exuberance. In these times when there are screamers who can only scream their songs at high pitches, his voice still travels from the lowest of notes to the highest of notes with ease. When you do not have many singers who can sing songs of such kind which require depth of voice, the music directors cannot be blamed. After the era of open voiced singing by those who had good voices, it was the era of those with husky voices and now it has been taken over by the era of screamers who scream at high decibels! Having a "good voice" is supposed to be a negative quality today. Music directors want the "different voice" and if you can sing off pitch too, then you are in the game :) In the name of the "variety voice" the genuine good voice has been ridiculed and ignored.
Raveendran Master used to compose such songs for Yesudas. Now M. Jayachandran has tried to emulate him. Is the strong resemblance the 1st interlude of this song has, to the second interlude of the song "Gopike" from "Nandanam" just a coincidence?
Dr. K.J Yesudas has rendered this song giving every thing that it demands. It's a no doubt, a 100% singer's song which would have definitely not reached the levels it has, if some other singer would have sung it. I have tried to sing it in the best way I can, with the available track that I got.

Very many thanks for bringing up the legendary songs through blog.

After listening to his "Gori tera gaaon", "Mana Ho Tum" and other such gems in Hindi during my teenage years, I used to wonder why KJ Yesudas did not sing more for the Hindi film industry. I also wonder the same about Suresh Wadkar who is one brilliant singer and whose voice and style I often compared with that of Yesudas.

I usually avoid commenting on songs which I do not understand. However, good music has a profound effect on the listener irrespective of language. And this was one such rendition!

Pradip, I agree to your observation about the different voices. In my mind the common man needs to be blamed equally because of their new taste. I am with you that music directors cross borders to get a high pitch "pitchy" singer..when there is a wealth of talent here in India. I must also add that for some extent the malyalam cinema still has not really embraced these with open hands.

Great singing with Excellent expressions ...loved it to the core !!

Hi Pradeep...

So nice to hear your Malayalam song after a gap...It is as brilliant as any other renditions of yours. Enjoyed all the way.

I wish to say something about this song in particular. I have not somehow heard the original song so far... But have heard many cover versions of this. Honestly I used to wonder how everyone was saying the song as a huge hit in Kerala and all over. After hearing your version, now I know why it is a huge hit...especially wish to agree 100% on your observation about the need to have a certain voice quality to sing such songs. Not everyone can create an impression singing a cover version of such songs.

You did a wonderful job. Thanks a lot..

Wonderful song !! The very first time I listened to this song ..I got goosebumps..and wondered about how strong KJY is..despite his age ! I feel that this song is one of his best in recent times.

Hats off to MJ for such nice melodies. He is one of the MDs I like these days.

About your singing - I got goosebumps Pradipji..no jokes. Wonderfully sung ! Superb emotions !! Way to go.

Your comment on what is expected from modern singers is very true..indeed !!

Excellent singing Pradeepji. MJ is an excellent Audio engineer and he brings the best out of KJY. There had been a lot of songs recently, which KJY shouldn't have sung or give it to somebody else. However there is no point in asking him to stop singing, as we have the same superstars for last 25 years.
