Mitwa-KANK-Shanker Ehsaan Loy

Rhythm, Vibe and Sound are what describe the Trio of Shanker Ehsaan and Loy in Bollywood. They have been regularly churning out hits one after another since a very long time. After the trio was formed there has been no looking back. They have the best production houses of Bollywood backing them. The latest in the bandwagon of hits is the music of Salame Ishq. All their songs are marked by melody. The "SEL touch" is evident in all their creations. Having the mercurial singer Shanker has been the main strenght of this trio. His vocal range and creative abilities have been always evident in all the songs he has sung. The film KANK (Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna) was such a hit in 2006. I present the song "Mitwa" which was selected as the most popular song of 2006 by NDTV recently in an opinion poll. This song moves on the same mood as "Har Ghadi" from "Kal Ho Na Ho". The only difference is the raw, rustic, powerful voice of Shafqat Amanat Ali. This was avery tough song to sing but was quite enjoyable as it was a new challenge to sing continuously in the higher octaves which is very uncommon in malayalam cine music. This song also shows the "paki sound" or the "sufi sound" that is quite popular among music lovers in the north and has become the current trend in Bollywood. I also would like to point out the small similarities to the carnatic music style of using "gamakas" at places such as "mera man yeh bata de tu" ...maybe the shanker effect!

Your range and depth are amazing...
But IMVHO, the style/brigas in this rendition sound pretty Carnatic as against Sufi...

sindhuja..you are right...I have done what i can do best..since I do not have any idea of sufi singing. Also I think in Bollywood or any film music universatility in music is slowly emerging. You find shanker using typical carnatic phrases in many of his songs. In this song if you listen carefully to the original you will be surprised to see some small similarities with the south especially where he sings "mera man yeh bataa" the bataa has been sung with typical carnatic gamakas as someone from south would have sung it! maybe the shanker effect after all :-)

Very nice but as sindhuja was feeling, there is a carnatic feel through the song. but very very nicely sung

Awesome singing pradip. The carnatic element is there but you have used your carnatic singing skills positively to give the power the song needs.Anyway the difficult bhrigas definitely need some sort of classical music training to be sung so precisely.Anyone cannot sing this song. But feels very nice.Keep it up.

Awesome singing pradip. I did feel the carnatic touch but I would say that you have used your carnatic skills to give the song a new dimension. I see that you have improvised some of the original harkaths to suit your style which I feel as very creative and original singing. But the folk element is still in tact. keep it up.

Exceptional singing. My knowledge of Carnatic and Sufi music is zero. May be ignorance is bliss. I could enjoy the music without worrying about style :-)

Pradip,

Was about to type something in similar lines to what Sindhuja had said but then I saw your reply and here is how I see it.

Singing a different style in an already existing strong style, Sufi in this case as you said is particularly very endearing to my ears since I love experimentation. Although I agree that it might seem odd to people to hear classic "classical" styles in an otherwise dominated music, it does give it a very beautiful feeling IMHO :)

Lastly, (most adjectives have already been used) Manohar & I were blown away by listening to your version and now decided that we should get the audio CD today before we go out LOL

Extremely enviable range and a rendition to die for! Excellent job ...

Wow. Pradip...what a song...! Hmm..loved it.! What a song!

SEL for sure are master musicians. Like you said Shankar's voice and the range is amazing.!

I remember I watched a program on NDTV about the songs in KANK. I started liking the MITWA song the very first time I listened to it. But I must say..Your version..is wonderful!

FYI - I had taped your daughter singing this song while I visited you. Every now and then I play it + your Urmila song.! Both are superb !

To change style or not?

The challenge, that I face in every song while singing songs of other professional singers is, to change style or not to change style. There is always a original to compare with and one cannot run away from that..so in those lines, sufi or not, the ability to render a song as difficult as this is always commendable!

Pradipji,

Wow ..Awesome rendition ! ..Simply Amazing ..! To emulate Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan is itself a big achievement ...:-) ...Please consider singing some of his songs from album Sagar-Fuzon as well.

How about Rahat Fateh Ali Khan's songs now ? ;-)

Cheers,
-Vishal

I was amazed after hearing your singing. How come you are not in bollywood?
Original Mitwa definitely has sufi touch. It was easier for Shafquat owing to his sufi heritage. Also he is from Patiala gharana (which specializes in kind of taans sung in Mitwa). You should be given more credit for these taans.
