Tum Bin Jaon Kahan-R.D Burman-Kishore Magic
I was busy with some programs & recordings for some days, so could not post anything for almost a week. Have attempted a song of Kishore Kumar which I recorded as my preparation for a program at Cochin recently. This song was also sung by Mohammad Rafi in the same film. But incidentally the Kishore version become a big hit! There is a bit of Yodeling in this song which is Kishore Kumar's trademark in many songs. I have come to see that in my absence as in Murali's case my chat box which was for chat purposes has become a fight box of sorts! I thank my fans and listeners for supporting me always. Your good wishes and support always has helped me fight baseless and wild allegations. I started singing Hindi in 1973 from my school in Gujarat, and have traveled the long one year route of "Meri Awaz Suno" where my hindi was tested by almost all the music directors and singers of Bollywood including Mannadey, Bappi Lahiri, Anupam Jalota, Jatin Lalit, Usha Khanna, Sanjeev Kohli (Legendary Madan Mohan's son), Pamela Chopra (Yash Chopra's wife) and finally in the finals by Lata Mangeshkar, Mannadey, Pandit Jasraj and Bhupen Hazarika. Incidentally the first song which I sang in my audition and competition was Dil Aisa Kissine Mera Toda, a Kishoreda number which was the turning point of my career and the first decision to take me in the competition was made by Sanjeev Kohli & Pamela Chopra based on that song! I sang songs of Kishore, Rafi, Mukesh, Mannadey, Yesudas, Hemant, Talat etc. during the course of the competition and was pitted against all the Hindi speaking singers of India. So I know what I am, my strong points and my weaknesses more than anyone else! If someone calls my fans and listners blind, maniacs and deaf, I have no option but to retaliate as it paramounts to insulting all the mentioned great people who taught me music and believed in my music. I have always been attacked with deliberate intentions to dent my confidence, but I have fought back always and have emerged stronger in my determination. I know my music and know when I go off track. I have always admitted my mistakes and have taken good and sincere advice. This is all due to God's grace, my classical music teachers, music directors, the above mentioned greats of Indian music, with whom I have worked with, and thousands of listeners who give me the courage to go on. In music there is no beginning or end. It's an endless journey. Some people take joy in showing off by assuming their knowledge to be supreme. This is true in every field. Such people are not sincere and just want to get attention. I just neglect such people as they will be lost in the crowd if ignored. I have crossed the stage where I would impulsively act upon someone who would say that hey...your Hindi songs are all rubbish…. you should stop singing Hindi, and some others may say that hey...your Malayalam songs are no good...sing only Hindi...so what advice should I take? Amusing isn't it??? Staying invisible you can talk anything.....We should work on our beliefs and confidence and not on forced ideas...Everyone will eagerly share your success. No one will share your pains and the difficult road to success.... You can prevent my voice being heard in films, but you cannot prevent my voice being heard by thousands of music lovers all over the globe through this blog!I am removing the chat box. If someone wants to give sincere advice they can use the comments section or e-mail me and I will definitely consider it looking into its merits. If it is vague and just to cater attention, I will ignore it. Once again I thank all those who believe in good music.
Some more songs.... three duets... one with Vidya, another with Vidyu and one with Meera, a Mehdi Hassan Ghazal are next in the list!

pradip, excellent way to counter that rubbish by the crank kumar.Great singing as always! Kishore lives again in your voice. We all are with u always.
pradeepetta, superb way to reply to those absurd comments. Kishore Kumar would be proud of this rendering full of passion.keep the good work going.do not heed to such false propaganda.
Enjoyed this rendition very much, Pradip...Anil has done a fabulous job with the track!
Pradip, you should not worry about such baseless comments...! Pl continue to share ur songs with fans like us!
Terrific and mindblowing rendition pradip sir. The depth and emotion in your voice takes the song with such ease and flow. Those doubting your kishore kumar or hindi song singing should be really jerks! You are a Ph.D in Kishore and Mukesh songs. You have got the yodeling right this time(seen you singing this song at cochin where there was a problem in the yodeling part)
Pradip
Its been while ...
Nicely sung, its pretty common to get all kind of comments on net, just simply ignore them. You know who you are dont even waste your time on these comments
cheers
Ganesh

Hope u are well soon and back to blogging actively as before.
Sir, I've downloaded this song. Just Wonderful.
Waiting for the Mehdi Hassan Ghazal.
Thanks
Pradeep, I am from Pakistan and takes pride in speaking Urdu/Hindi as my first language. I think you are doing great with your hindi and I have never noticed anything incorrect in your hindi diction so I really cannot relate to anyone who says you have that problem. One more thing, people always find negative things even in the most positive of all things. And that should not bother you at all.
Finally, you mentioned Kishore and Rafi both sang this song. But Rafi Sahab's lyrics are for the happy version of the song while Kishore Da sang the sad version. In that respect, the two sang slightly different versions of the same song!
your singing transcends the barrier of language and continents and reaches out to all genuine music lovers of the golbe. You are one of the very few of real musicians in kerala with such an awesome command in so many languages. Tum bin was just mellifluous! Your hindi is perfect and especially kishore songs are just brilliant. liked Dil aisa, koi humdum, dekha ek khwab, teri duniya se and tere mere milan from the older posts. kepp up the good work pradip.
Wonderful! You have retained Kishore Kumar's nasal style of singing with ease.
Hi Pradip,
After a long time ( it seemed so) an excellent effort. "Clinically" rendered. But I must say that it was a bit lacking in the Bhaava. Kishore's version had such a melancholic undertone while Rafi's had the sunny sprightfulness to it.
Hoping to hear the ones promised soon!
With best wishes,
madhavan kutty
Wow! all this happened? This song itself is a brilliant reply to that opinion! :)
wow...Pradip..excellent work. Please keep them coming
All your songs are good. I would say Praid, you should sing in movies too... that is my prayers. Yesudas(our own beloved Dasettan), Jayachandran, Madhu Balakrishnan, Pradip Somasundaran...
my email id is rkrishp99@gmail.com, I need some sincere advise on karaoke singing and the software to use... I am brother of Prashanth Internet Palakkad (Dotcompals), Living in the US for past 6 years and I am software professional studying music with Balu Sekhar...here at Ohio.
With Love & regards
great song pradipettan... You are gifted, nobody can stop you, Inshah Allah, you will make it great !!!
pradeepji, the other version by rafi was happier and this was supposed to be sad. but kishoreda has used yodeling and the result was a peppy melancholic effect.you have brought out the correct mood in this song.excellent singing.hope to see more of such songs.
Hello Mr Somasundaran..I am a researcher in Houston and came across your thread in the R.D. Burman community and am taking the liberty of sending this message. From what I gather on your webpage, you can choose to ignore this message. I just wanted to convey that you have a good voice. I was particulary impressed with the way you rendered song number 46 (which is one of the more underrated song by Kishoreda from pavitr papi). Might I also add that I have become a fan of yours just listening to this one song.
Pradip Sir:
Excellent rendition.I was carefully listening to this during the Ekm programme too. Please ignore the foolish comments by people who doesnt want to gain anything out of it, but just show off and hurt other people. We are all with you as all of us know that you are a great singer and a perfect gentle man.

Very painful to hear that you are going through. Anyways, Music in manyways in an expression of who you are, so keep going with utmost passion as ever , seeing if the critics has some valid points to make your rendition more beautiful. Prayers and best wishes.
Pradip,
You don’t have to defend yourself. I think you have passed that phase long back and proved your talent and skills over and over again.
For every achiever and achievement, there will be detractors and jealous and wicked people who don’t have anything else to do. You can completely ignore them.
You know what you can do, we know what your talents are and what you are capable of and the thousands of your will be always be with you.
A true performer lives in the hearts of the listeners and you and your songs are with us. We are really grateful for the effort you put in to sing the songs in addition to carrying out other responsibilities.
So what advice you should take? I would say none. YOU SHOULD FOLLOW YOUR HEART and I am sure that with your talent, nobody can prevent you from getting what you deserve.
So ignore the detractors and follow your goal. We are with you…every step of your musical journey. And our collective well wishes and prayers will be always with you—to inspire you, help you excel and bring you luck.
Good luck my dear friend and looking forward to hear more music from you…
Alexis
dear pradip:
your new song is sooo.... nice. last week when i was listening to your old songs, i saw ur chat box filled up with utter bad words, felt very sad. today when i read your comments on it, i really feel like crying, it's so touching. years back when you were in the final of MAS, i stil remember we all were in front of tv to see the karalite winning, i was in college i think.
anyway, i am stil waiting for mehdi number
I wont say it's brilliant Pradip. You have done a fair job. It would be unjustful if I said it's flawless. As there can be no second kishore flaw is inevitable.
There are few things to be noted. First of all there is a lead tune in the background which is amateurish and secondly you could have put some more emotions to this song. At some places especially the humming bit it goes kinda stale. Rendition is fine though. You have tried to put in extra bass to simulate kishore which in not very cohesive. The good thing is you have sung the song as it is and not made any modifications like some other singers do.your diction is spot on. If you think these are positive comments I will post more. Good luck for your future ventures.
Madhavanji, nice to see u back....hope you are o.k... rohit...thank you for the creative suggestions.First of all when singing cover versions of the greats like kishore and rafi, i never have any intension of bettering them and never will be able to do so, so the comparison itself is unwarranted. They can never be cloned, it's just an effort by a fan to emulate them. Whenever I have an idea of singing differently I keep my own style and voice as in Oo Sajna and Mayi Ri.Some songs we even cannot think of doing differently as this one! Regarding the emotional part, I will try to correct the version with more emotion. Regarding the lead tune in the background, I cannot help it as it is a karaoke track. And regarding the bass, it's a byproduct of ordinary room acoustics as the mic gives a boom. I will try different positions to correct it. I know that it is there in many songs. I do have tried to cut the bass with eq, but sometimes it still remains.rohit, thanks for the positives like diction. If you could give more clerer idea on what stale means it would be more helpful. Also please do not comment as anonymous. Please give your e-mail id too so that I can get back to you.
Rohit, if you have observed the song you would see that even though it's supposed to be a sad version, with the yodeling and the tune, it does not fully fall into the sad categories as other kishoreda songs like teri duniya se (pavitra paapi) or Mai shayar badnaam..So there sure is the confusion for the singer who sings these songs on how far the emotional aspect should be... very very tricky...
hi, am just a passerby and noticed your blog.I also happened to see the comments here.I think the comments about putting more emotion than needed is not rational. The original kishoreda song still stays in my mind and I think there is no melancholy in the feel. kishoreda has just given a tinge of sadness not deep pain.so pradip you have managed to keep the emotion to the correct extend without overdoing it.Unlike the regular clones who sing only kishore or rafi songs and who distort the style by over imitating the style and voice, your singing is more refined and dignified and does not make a mockery of singing as many do.Also adding up to your positives is that you have your own style and voice different from any singer old or new when singing the hindi songs you mentioned.Do not go by odd opinions. be your own judge. The bass effect is called proximity effect and can be reduced with different mic placings in the room and keeping more distance from the mic.The starting humming can be made better and the staleness avoided by giving it a far reverb effect in the start and then decreasing it as it ends as in the original. You are real talent.Take only genuine advice. Anyway you did not have an RD Burman to correct and monitor you when you sang it.
Wonderful performance Pradip-ji!!!
Deblina
We are with you Pradip. Nothing will stop you. My hearty best wishes to you to succeed in every attempt.
I am loving all your songs....let some maniacs not affect your performance .....
I would differ on what some have mentioned here. when you cannot find anything seriously wrong you just try to find out something just for the sake of it. that's wat is happening here. diction is good, emotions are as necessary, technically flawless with perfect pitching.so then what? just comment on the karaoke track? say the emotions could be better? IMHO this is as good or if not better than any kishore clones out there.and pradip is not competing with any of the greats. so why the unnecessary comparison? good work. lagey raho pradip.
Happy Diwali to you sir
Happy Diwali Pradeep...
Krishna Prasad
pradip etta paatu keettuu resichu...i truly enjoyed listening to the song...please do keep us entertained with more from your stablee
THis is brilliant
Just some rhythm is lacking in the song.I guess thats because you r tending to induce too much emotion in the song.
Remember this man? Pradip Somasundaran! He’s the winner of the 1st Television music contest “mere awaz suno” conducted by Doordarshan. His Hindi is perfect. In my opinion he’s doing a fantastic job in my favorite show “Anjali”.I've posted the same comment and started a new topic, titled as "Pradip Somasundaran" at http://www.amritatv.com/forum/index.php
well sung.
u can certainly go ahead. offcousre
i wil not compare u with kishore because even if u copy his style, that magicalvoice, touching voice wil be missing.
u wil also agree with me, isnt.
n mind u,i m not discouraging u . u r a good singer without any doubt.(no problem with hindi).
so continue doin ur good work, god bless u
Ricky, thank you..Anyway, I am not a Kishore or Rafi or Mukesh clone as many are. I do not imitate the voice.I imitate thestyle and try to be the singer...A mere voice imitation would be lifeless in most cases. You cane go through the different songs, in different languages, styles...on my blog and will understand what I mean. My aim is never to imitate any singers voice..if it is similar in any way to the singer..it's not by effort but by devotion and awe. They all are greats and cannot be duplicated...ever again!!!
Thank you for the positive criticism and encouragement.Pls hear other songs too..
