A Telugu Song-Maateraani-Oo Paapaa Laali-S.P.B-Illayaraja Magic Again!

And finally I managed to get a nice Karaoke with which I could begin my innings in Telugu. I had been frantically trying to get one for so long since I have not sung Telugu film songs since I left Vizag in 1991. This one is Materaani Chinnadaani from Oo Paapaa Laali, a dubbed version of Keladi Kanmani in Tamil. This song was a rage in the end of the eighties as it started off a competetion of sorts among leading singers in singing songs which had stanzas leaving one breathless! We also have had Shankar Mahadeven singing breathless and also K.J.Y doing that occassionally in some Raveendran Songs. But nevertheless this song was a beautiful composition yet again by I.R and which attained magical proportions in the terrific voice of S.P.B which is always deep rooted in expression!

Song: Maaterani Chinnadani
Film: Oo Paapa Laali
Originally sung by: S.P.B
Music: Illayaraja
Lyrics: Veturi Sundara Murthy

It is very difficult to keep the pitch and expression in control in the two stanzas and telugu not being your mother tongue (i hope)it would have been a tough job. But the result is spectacular!I am speechless. Whay are you languishing in a teaching job? You should be singing in all languages throughout India.

Pradip san,

Your selection of songs are so special. Very good breath control...Sing a lot of Telgu songs..Heard that you had got prizes for Telgu rendition when you did PG at Vizag from one of ur interviews. Very lucky to have exposed to many languages.

Of all Telugu songs I liked "Bhavamulona Baahyamu Nandunu Govinda Govinda..." from Annamaachaarya. If you know that can you sing that ?

Your frequency of singing is amazingly requires a congratulation from we all music lovers....Go ahead and climb the heights.

Your style and diction in whatever song you sing is immaculate. That is a gift. Also you have this great gift of singing in the original singers style(not blind imitation as some others do)without losing out any of the basic elments of sruthi, layam amd bhavam. Also when you sing your own songs you have a unique style and melodius voice to give the song a pradip touch as in Ennakkaruppin, Oo Sajna, Ashadam and like. Why don't you take up singing as a ful time career?

Pradip,

Good show.

Just a few things that I noticed which are so different from the Tamizh version:

- Chinnadhaani and pallavinchi wordings correspondingly in Tamizh were more flowy and extended.
-In the 1st charanam "Kannipilla kalave naakikha logam" interestingly has slightly different notes in the Tamizh version. I am sorry I am not sure of the swara notation there...so I am not able to explain it better!!

Overall good job, nice mixing, and a very good karaoke.

Byju> I am looking for the track. Will sing as soon as I get it.

Meera>Can't help the wordings as both were in different languages and written by different people and sung differently according to the meaning mood and wordings, so the stress given to the lyrics are different in both versions. Can't expect exactly the same rendereng even by the same person at every place when he sings dubbed songs. He may give different expressions:-)See at the place of kannippilla in the telugu version. SPB has used the note "ma" to begin "kalale" while he uses "pa" to begin "Arugil" in the Tamil version. He has used his liberties to slightly vary both the versions. When I sang the telugu version I did not compare and hear the tamil with this one. After your comments I did compare both versions out of curiosity! I just tried to sing as he has in telugu, not the tamil version:-)

Pradeepetta. That was a skillfull execution of a wonderful song. I do not agre to meera manohar's comments. A singer has the liberty to sing two versions as he pleses.A comparison here between tamil and telugu is trivial and unwarranted.Only question is whether u have kept up to the telugu version and sung well. You have sung the song with excellent emotions and is technically a superlative effort. So why prick needles to wound when there is no illness at all.

Ullas> Thank you. Just a small advice. Please do not make the blog a place of war with words as you have done with Murali.Every singer posts with lot of enthusiasm. Please do not pour cold water on their enthusiasm. Be more decent and civilised in your comments and do not make violent statements even if you disagree on points made by others. Leave this to the person who posted the songs to respond. You will only make enimies in this way. Hope you take it in good sense :-)
