An ONAM Song and a LATA Song!

Falling in love, on first sight, can be for a beautiful maiden, an exquisite place, the new Video iPod, the Mac OS, iMac or a song! I fell in love with this song the very first time I heard it during my College days. Salilda’s wizardry has always baffled me! Hence when I got this awesome sounding karaoke track courtesy my friend Pradeep from Houston, I did not think twice! Also singing and mixing this gave me more joy than singing those horrible modern day songs in “sandwiched” made up “Music Shows”! This is the first time that I try the song of a female singer. Hence this is entirely in my natural style. Salilda’s songs are like the ocean, calm for the outside, but raging with the sudden up’s and downs of the tides which keep one guessing till the end. He might have been the only one other than Madanmohan, with that mischievous élan for taking the singer and listener to the extreme dangerous limits, with the totally unexpected beautiful twists and turns all throughout the song! This song is also one of the technical masterpieces of Lataji! Hearing this one wonders if any one else could sing with such control, fineness and refinement! This is an apt example for all singers of the new generation on how important it is to have every word of the song immersed in sruthi. When we sing as much as we can, fully immersed in sruthi, matching our voice with the backing instruments, the better the song sounds. This is the scientific reason and one of the many other reasons, for our ears liking some songs while not being interested in some others. We may call it a combination of resonance, harmonics, timbre, etc.
There is no excuse for pitching issues in songs in these days when software can transform even crows to cuckoo’s! Imagine how difficult it would have been in those days of analog single track recording, to sing a song as difficult as this in a single stretch. And take the case of our super star singers in Malayalam who struggle to sing the same song on stage which they sang in films! I recently heard an interview of a very famous singer who is a star son who was struggling for breath, and not able to sing a song he himself had recorded for films! He had no qualms in admitting it though!

Yet another ONAM arrives! Many music lovers had requested an ONAM song. As a bonus I post this Adipoli (peppy) ONAM song for all of you. This song is from an ONAM album of mine for which Balabhaskar has set the music. I will be out of station for this week and will be back to blogging mostly by this week end. So wishing you all a very HAPPY ONAM! Hope you enjoy both the songs! The photo to the right shows "Pulikkali" (Tiger Dance) held on the 4th day of ONAM celebrations and is a speciality of Trichur, my hometown.

Thanks for the Salilda number! Oo Sajna is another sterling example of Salilda's genius. Your style (nuances and the general feel) of singing is distinctly different from Lataji's and yet is very novel and refreshing! Waiting for more Salilda numbers!

OH My God !!! This song is a taboo for Male singers, one of the difficult pieces with these many strange sangathis , can only be rendered by Lataji so beautifully. And you had the courage to attempt the song !!! I can imagine how you liked the song. If she hear you render it, definitely she will hug you, for attempting the song. Now I can see how singers give soul to the song; its not just singing with perfect harmony; you give something special (maybe urself!!!) to the song to make it special..Amazing. But I am possessive I want that song only in Lataji's voice.....( Kidding )...

I feel the part "aisI rimajhima mein o saajan, pyaase pyaase mere nayana tere hi, khvaab mein, kho jae"; I wish you could have sitar, violin and tabala accompaniment live ......Always karoke has its limitation....( SAD )

How amazingly you transposed her pitch to you !! Congrats... And a thank you sooo much for the Onam Song , with so much vigour. Did you say the dialoge in the begining of the song ? Wish you a very happy Onam. Very different !!!

Wow! that was really something. I have never heard any singer other than Lataji sing this song so perfectly. It is a tight rope walk as someone else mentioned but you have come out unscathed with flying colours. In addition to the tecnicalities which you successfully countered, I found that you have given a new dimension to this song with your powerful expression singing.

Hey, I just can't hate those guys who are keeping an awesome talent like you away from singing in films. They must be fools. You are miles and miles ahead of the Madhu's, Vidhu's,Vineed's and Afsals! you have a terrific voice with awesome range and versatility to beat even the chameleon! feel like banging there heads.I feel helpless on seeing Vineed struggling to sing even his own song like you mentioned.Shame on such idiotic singers.Don't waste your time here man. You should be making big moolah as instead of those fools out there claiming to be star singers.

lata was never an expression singer as Asha. Lata depends more on her voice and asha who lacks the quality voice of lata compensated for this by expression singing. But both are great in their own ways. You have shown how the same song that latajii sang can be so different with brilliaint expression singing!Very good work.
The ONAM song of Balabhaskar also terrific.

Fabulous!!.O Sajna ..effortless, expression full and melodious singing. If a male sang this song in the film, he would sound exactly like you...perhaps thats why lata ji sang it ..coz u weren't there :). Didn't understand the other onam songs but sounded equally lovely!.

O Sajna is done wonderfully. I felt as if you could increased the volume of your voice a bit more and add a little more echo. It sounded more like a live recording!

Thanks for sharing!

Ghan Sahab, I wont see there is a need to increase the volume or add echo effect to this, the way he rendered is something special, I am quite sure it is a direct trasposition of Lataji's Sruthi to Pradeep's Sruthi with soothing volume. Pradeep's voice has that ghana which does not need any echo for just listening pleasure, unless like the modern numbers which adds echo or altered pitch. I guess the songs hearing live has something so special into it. We can feel the artist's soul in the song not the software's crankiness. Its my view, Pradeep can take the final word.

Regards,
Sreejith
