Mayi Ri(Dastak)-Madan Mohan and Lata-Divine Ecstasy!
When I first heard the song, I wondered how anyone could sing this song as Lataji had sung! This was years back. Then recently I stumbled upon the Madan Mohan version which rekindled my interest in the song. My search for a karaoke track ended yesterday and I did not waste time in trying it. Madan Mohan and Lataji were made for each other in music. They created sheer magic and the result was divine everytime. All the songs were gems and it is no wonder that in any music competetion you find that most of the songs rendered are Madanmohan-Lata compositions! His songs were different from others. He was very strict and was very particular about the lyrics that he used in his songs. His orchestration was a connoisseur’s delight. He did only 104 films in his 25-year career, of which maybe only 10 were box-office successes. But all his songs are remembered only for their music and are immortal! He never won many awards, but two films released after his demise - Mausam (1975) and Laila Majnu (1976) - became runaway hits. Suddenly, his name became the most revered among composers - and is still held in great esteem. None of his films would be listed in the top 100 of Indian cinema, but at least 10 of the 100 most-remembered film songs would be his. The song that I present here is from "Dastak" which fetched him a National Award. There are two versions as I mentioned earlier and I have used both versions as my base. Somehow I am finding a new delight in singing female songs as they give you the freedom of giving original and fresh perspective and expression to the song whereas when you sing male songs you tend to go with the tide most of the times and also are liable to be compared more. And what a song it is! I think no composer-singer duo would ever create such magic again. This song excells in melody, mystery, emotion, singing excellence, and whatever else you could ask for in a song! It's sheer divine ecstasy!Song: Mayi Ri
Film: Dastak
Music: Madanmohan Kohli

Have been following all your songs. You have a terrific voice with your own style of singing and individuality. You have this rare gift of giving soul and heart to any song you sing.Keep the good work up.
Your uncanny ability to pick up rare gems like mayi ri and reintroduce them for music lovers is commendable. Mindboggling singing again! Kudos.

Pradipji,
This is one of my favourite songs. You really have catured the essense of the composition. I have always felt that Madan Mohanji's compositions could only be sung by Lataji or Madan Mohanji himself.
GREAT work.
Thanks again for making all Mallus proud!!!

Simply gr8 voice u have yaar. it is one of my favourate songs and after lata, it is u who gave fully justice in rendering this classic number. cheers!!!
Dear Pradip,
I heard you sing Mai Ri Mai Kaase Kahoon composed by the great Madan Mohan. That was an amazing rendition. Are you already doing playback singing? I always wanted to be one but luck would have it otherwise. However, I sing whenever I get a chance. I was wondering if you could please send me the Karaoke of Mai Ri Mai Kaase Kahoon.
thanks a lot.

Madanmohan, the king of ghazals gave a separate dimension to the sweet voice of Lata. Most of his compositions had ghazal andaz and Lata could use her classical base with her expression to provide life in the compositions.
Pradip,
Truly, singing female songs opens up a lot of doors because certain types of emotions are reserved for female compositions. This is a very very good rendition, Lata would be proud. I believe you have achieved some of her inimitable musical expression - way to go!
Hi Pradip

AMAZING!!!!!!!!I am speechless----
I heard it almost 10 times ...will keep hearing till i get every note embedded in my mind--really alwaz wanted to sing this song--U sang it and made it easy for me--very clear and very soothing rendition!!no words -just claps claps!!

Do you know how I got chance to know about this song I was a child perhaps of 13 when Vividh Bharti suddenly stopped its programme and announced sudden and unfortunate demise of Shri Madan Mohan and there came the words from Great Lata she said Madan Mohan was brother for her and surprise she declared that only a few people know that Madan Mohan was singer par excellence thereafter this song was played at that time I was not able to understand the real song but till date more than 35 years are gone I sing this song in broken pieces and feel the voice How upbeat I am feeling when I will again listen this great voice
Iam an ardent lover of Madan Mohanji's compositions and you hve rendered this one wonderfully.Would like to hear more from you.I attended a programme few years ago-"Madan Mohan unplugged".Lataji herself attended, but did not sing any song.Nevertheless a treat to the soul it was.Why not we combine to organise a huble show.i live in Mumbai.
Thanx

By the time, I'm writting comment here, I'm listening the music I downloaded from you.. Madan Mohan sung.. Mai ree... Just thinking what to write, but not getting any words to express my feeling. All I can say - THANKS A LOT SIR, for such a nice song. I was searching for this one from last one month or more. Thanks again
Years ago when I was In Bombay a friend of mine made me listen to this song. It was her favorite, a good singer herself she used to it often. I fell in love with the song the first time I heard it.
Years have passsed since I left the city and the memories of those wonderful years have faded but the resonance of this 'little heard' song still hangs in the ether and it keeps on surfacing from the deep recesses of my soul reminding me of those sunny days and of Ranjana of whom I havent heard since.
