Pinneyum Pinneyum-Vidyasagar's Enchanting Music!

Vidyasagar needs no introduction for any of the South Indians. He has already been there since a very long time and has been giving us enchanting music in all the south Indian languages since a decade. Initially he was considered good only for soft melodies. But he broke the belief when he started rolling out fast peppy numbers and had all the people in the south dancing to his tunes with numbers like "Appidi Poodu", in Tamil and recently "Omanappuza" in Malayalam and "Devuda Devuda" from the "Rajnikanth" megahit "Chandramukhi" in Tamil. Since that there has been a gap in Malayalam. We all miss his music very much here and hope he is back soon. I thought to remember this melody king with one of his best songs in Malayalam. Pinneyum Pinneyum won "Yesudas" and "Gireesh Puthecheri" the state awards for the best singer and lyricist respectively in 1997. This song was on the lips of everyone and still evokes a nostalgic romantic feeling. Such class melodies will never die.

This is a beautiful song. I remember Chithra mentioning on an Asianet show that this was one of her favourite song that she sang(female version). She also mentioned that Vidyasagar was a hugely talented music director who was noticed late.

I love your rendition. I am sitting here wondering why people like Adnam and Udit come to sing Malayalam songs and are paid so much more than south singers when there is huge bank of talent in Kerala. You sound lovely.

Pradeepetta,

Somehow I feel you rendered this in a hurry or something...I didnot like Dasettan's original rendition even, Chitra's was owesome rendition, she brought out that "expectation" bhavam in the song. Both you and Dasettan failed to do as she did it..Its my personal opinion, somehow I feel that way.

on their flaws and suggestions for their improvement. After such corrections are made I re-do the songs and publish the comments with my reply where I mention about the steps that were taken for the correction/modification.This is what I have done so far. But for this I need to interact with those who point out flaws. Hence I request such people to respond with their e-mail id's so that I can interact with them and correct the flaws if possible or offer explanations.

Sreejith,
After giving heed to your observations, I have re-done the song. Please listen to it again.
Here note the following points
1) Regarding whether I sang it it in a hurry: Absolutely not! I had the whole night to sing! So the problem was this. The Karaoke track was a little bit fast and so when you listen to all the sangathis and intricate bhavas it feels as if it was done hurriedly!
Solution: I have decreased the speed of the track a little and have resung the entire song.
2)As all malayalees, I had the version of Yesudas in my heart and ears when I sang the song. So if you say that his version was not good(totally your personal opinion)
then my version cannot be better as I had his version in my ears when I sang it, not Chitra's!
Even then, I have now tried to do it entirely differently with my own feel of the "expectation" bhavam. Remember that in the film, the female, manju has a sad tinge to the "expectation" while the male , jayaram is in a happy mode. So you cannot ever compare "chitra"'s version and "Dasettan"'s versions bluntly and sing with chitra's version in mind. Both have their own importance in the film(IMHO).
Anyway thanks to you, I have explored new possibilities in this song! Sreejith, please do keep on giving suggestions but give your mail-id next time :-)
Also remember that I sing & record the song at the same time and mix the songs myself. So I am my own judge and everything appears in my own perspective. So my judgement is be prone to errors! It's your privelege to point our genuine errors.

Pradeepetta,

I listened , apologies if you had to put another round of recording.
This is better than Dasettan version which he got the award. As you can see I was matching to "feel" that expectation in the song, which was not the exact emotion that is required by the actor. But I respect and congratulate on your thrive for perfection. Let Lord give you his infinite blessing to nuture and polish the amazing voice and talent you are born with Etta. Once more apologies for my ignorant comment.

This has been one of my favourite songs. I have listened to it several times and always felt that the songwriter captures the imagination of someone in love perfectly. You have done a great job rendering it.

I was always wanting to translate the song into English and realised how rich is Malayalam language and how enchanting were these lyrics while doing that.

Anyway here is my attempt... hope I could capture the essence of the song .... if not 'kshama'

Pinneyum Pinneyum - English Translation.

Time and again I hear the faint footsteps,
Of some one traversing the corridors of my dreams.
Time and again I hear the soft melodies,
Of some one playing a golden flute in the moonlight.

Could it be a fresh and early dawn,
Showering dewdrops clear as glass petals.
Could it be a wandering breeze,
Lazily running its fingers on the chords of my heart.

Was it the wings gently throbbing,
Of a romantic dove crooning in her dreams.
Was it a clear shadow picture appearing,
On the panes of a window that opens on its own

Time and again , some one …… , someone ……

Could it be the soft and lush evenings,
Applying sandal paste on a young moon’s forehead.
Could it be the pretty dragonflies naughtily buzzing,
In the backyard where the koils sing.

Was it the glow of a soul shining gracefully,
Like a little lamp lit for eternity.
Was it a soft whisper saying,
Someone that the heart desires is coming soon.

Sherring
