Meri Awaz Suno-Mohammad Rafi Lives On!
It has been 26 years since Mohammad Rafi left this world for another world of melodies. But all the melodies that he left for us in this world still linger on! He was born in a small village called Kotla Sultan Singh near Amritsar in December 1924. His family shifted to Lahore when he was still a baby. One day Rafi and his brother Hamid had gone to attend a performance by K L Saigal. But the legendary singer refused to sing since there was a power failure at the venue. Hamid went up to the organiser and asked if his brother could sing to keep the audience quiet. That was Rafi's first public performance -- at the age of 13. As it turned out, the setting was just right for him. Among the audience sat noted composer Shyamsunder who was so impressed that he invited the young Rafi to come to Bombay. Hamid brought him to Bombay without telling their father why they were going. Their mother, however, knew about it and blessed them. Mohd Rafi started his film career at the age of 20, with a punjabi song, Soniye Hiriye, teri yaad ne bahut sataya for the movie Gul Baloch, which was released on 28th February, 1944. Rafi could sing any type of song, be it pop, qawali, bhajan, gazal, romantic, rock’n'roll, light music, slow numbers, sad song, parody, fast numbers…, he was remarkeable with anything. He was the first to fit into the playback singer role in a convincing way. His voice enhanced the brilliance of actors like Dilip Kumar & Shammi Kapoor. His last recording was on May 26, 1980. He died on July 31, 1980.I present the song “Meri Awaz Suno” from Naunihal. This song is very much linked to what I am today! Absolutely remarkable lyrics with full depth of life by Kaifi Azmi set to tune by the eccentric genius Madanmohan Kohli.

Beautifully done! The depth and emotions so very evident and you have captured them completely! The only thing I notice is that when you emphasize on the "z" of "awaz", it sounded great but while repeating "awaz" sounded like "awad" at some places. I seem to be nit picking here but that's really all I could find. Great rendition!
Pradeepji,
Great to see yet another legend is being remembered here..
our tributes to the great..
This is a song that cannot be missed from the list of best Rafi songs without a doubt. it is quite a remarkable song, with its simplicity of composition and the beuty of the lyrics, and ofcourse, the paint and frame is worthless without the canvas..
Thank you very much, for the writeup and the song.
Khan Sahab> Thanks for pointing out that problem. In fact I noted it this morning when I heard it on my ipod on way to office and ha dalready made up my mind to correct it! You seemed to have read my mind from so far away! Excellent observation. Also note this interesting point. After I got home I listened to rafi Saab's original and found that the z's sound like d at some places and at some place because of the inferior recording quality those days the z is not clear. I also noted that if we cut short z it sounds like d! So i have given a little pull to the z to make it clear. Hear it now.
shaniyan> Thank you so much. you made my day at wiki! You are an angel!
Pradip:
Great writeup on Rafi and a wonderful song selection. Meri Awaz Suno is
also one of my favourites and I sing it here too during our
get-togethers. Rafi sang a beautiful ghazal for Madan Mohan in "Mera
Saaya" - "Aap Ke Pahloo Mein Aakar Rho Diye".
Very soothing rendition Pradipji.

Swati.
Pradip, just one word....
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!
its really melodious.... a reall soothing song :) great work once again
Beautifully rendered, Pradip :)
Hi,
Very well rendered. Was wondering why does the "Z" sound too prominent and then I noticed Khan Sahab's comment.(To an extent all of us from south of Vindhyas tend to sharpen our diction of Urdu words to such an extent that each word stand out.) Apart from that, flawless singing!
Sorry Pradip I am late here to comment!
What a song.!! What a song.!
Wow..I closed my eyes , put my head on the desk and listened.
Your singing doesn't need compliments. We all know about it. We all know your depth and your talents.
