K.L Saigal-The Immortal Voice

Well, I am sick, and my nose is running and have very bad sinusitis. But this will not prevent me from putting up something on my blog today! Since I am in no condition to sing, I decided to use a very old montage which is from a live show in 1998! I decided to move away from the likes of Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore, Yesudas, S.P.B, Jayachandran and give you a different experience. He may be called the forefather of all the above greats. The greatest of them all who reigned like a king in Hindi Films from 1932-1946! He is K.L Saigal or Kundan Lal Saigal who is said to have a voice which was so powerful that recording needles used to break when he sang, giving a tough time for the recording engineers those days! Born in a family of Jullunder in the year 1904, he entered in the films in 1931-32 and acted in several films until his untimely death on 18th January 1947 at the very young age of just forty-two! Alcohol eventually consumed him. As a boy his mother used to take him to a Sufi-Pir Salman Yousuf of the Yesvi sect. Singing was his hobby. Later on he learnt music and basic melodic structure and perfected after practicing a lot. He also learnt from the great masters: Faiyaaz Khan, Pankaj Mullick and Pahari Sanyal. In 1935, Saigal played the role that would come to define his acting career: that of the drunken title character in Devdas. At New Theatres, his singing style was influenced by the studio's top music directors, such as R.C. Boral, Pankaj Mullick, and Timir Baran. As an actor, his first film was Mohabbat Ke Aansoo (1932), but it wasn't until Chandidas in 1934 that he became a bonafide star in Hindi cinema. As a youngster, India's "melody queen" herself, Lata mangeshkar, is alleged to have said that she wanted to marry K.L. Saigal after seeing his performance in Chandidas!
Saigal's distinctive singing voice was so melodious and popular that he was idolized by the first generation of post-independence Bollywood playback singers, including Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, and even singers in the south like Ghantasala, Kamukara, T.M.S, P.B.S..... Saigal managed to develop what the Italians call ‘La Voce Bianca’ or the ‘White Voice’ of Italians that follows you like a scent and hides in your memory like a coiled serpent.
I present a very famous song of him here. I repeat that this recording being live would have mistakes, show my inexperience as a singer in my early days, and what not...but I was tempted to share this recording with you!

An excellent tribute to a legendary person. Very well done. I think you should do such profiles more often, so that people like us get to know more about such great personalities.

Wonderful blog and I wish you all the very best. I am sure you and Sandeep Chowta will be working together soon. I look forward to hear the music.

I am quite familiar with you as you are a regular at Jo's blog and he writes about you in many blogs. I have listened to some of the podcasts that you have done for Jo.

Wishing you all the best. Will regularly visit more as I can a lot about music and the people who make it.

Had heard it a few hours ago. You have captured the essence of KLS in voice modulation and mood, i honestly did not think that the "age" of recording mattered! Superb!

Dear Alexis,

Thanks for your encouraging words! We singers exist for the
music lovers. We need your love, pampering, encouragement, guidance, constant criticism ...for further improvement. We cannot exist without the listeners and I think audio blogging has given way to egos, and barriers of every kind towards true linking between the music creators and the listeners! I will surely follow your advice. Please do keep visiting.

Love & Regards
Pradip

Thanks for the informative write-up on Saigal. If he is the forefather of all the greats, I think he is probably the first who 'defined' play back singing - how light music is to be sung with emotions. At least that is what I gather from your wonderful performance.

I strongly urge and encourage you to do articles + music like these (you have always done that) since they add a personal touch for the care the artist oozes for the song. These make a nice reading and personally I enjoy them thoroughly

Also I cannot help but feel a similairty between this song and raatkali.

Pradip, excellent job on portraying the artist! We have some artists like Lata, Asha, Kishore, Rafi, Mukesh, Manna Day and many more who we have been following and respecting them as our teachers/idols but it’s interesting to see that idol also has an idol. This blog entry is about flashing light on our Guru’s Guru. These pioneers over the period of time have been forgotten if not remembered very scarcely, by listening to ‘So Jaa Raajkumari’ and reading about K.L.sahab you have rejuvenated the memory; this also is one way of paying them our respects.
Next time I would love to hear one of K.L.Sahab’s songs in your own voice, be prepared! Hope you feel better soon so we can start on our work.
Swati.

Oops, Pradip I did not realize that was you who sung this song. I am sorry. Since you were sick I did not think you were up to singing and also for some reason I did not recognize ur voice. I guess that’s a good thing…u did a great job of 'Presenting K.L.SAIGAL'

Pradeep mashe,
It was a very nice and informative post on a voice that may not be so familar with the current generation.. Jab dil hi toot gaya is more familiar with some ads than with the legends name these days..

It was an apt tribute to choose a song that insprired many.

Thanks!

Khan Saab, Shaniyan....Thanks,
Yes, I did forsee that saigal would not have many takers and many would not have even heard this song! I have the original too which I will put up on my blog so that at least diehard fans are able to hear his voice! I am also perturbed by the fact that as time goes by we are forgetting the greats who actually started playback singing and many already have forgotten these voices....very disturbing trend indeed. As I have mentioned earlier in some posts we should listen to the greats and every type of music to really know and guage what we have lost and where we stand!

Thank you very much for this Pradip - it's beautiful. I had only heard Lata Mangeshka's version of this before, and it is one of my most favourite songs.

I love Hindi songs but haven't (yet)learned to speak Hindi. I'm now looking for the lyrics so I can learn them phonetically. Can you help?

All the best Kathleenmavourneen, Perpignan, France

Dear Pradip,

I know you must be a very busy man, but I found your website on the internet when I was looking for the lyrics of Soja Rajkumari and I was very touched by your version of the song - many thanks for that, it was fabuleux. It's one of my favourite songs.

I am looking for the lyrics in Hindi, so that I can learn the song phonetically. I wonder if you could help me with this by sending me a copy of the lyrics or pointing me to a website where I can find them?

Sadly I don't speak Hindi (apart from asking for simple things like cups of tea or how are you), and I don't know the Hindi alphabet but if you know anywhere I can get the lyrics written down phonetically that would be great.

Thanks very much and keep up the good blogging!

Awesome song. I love KL Saigal's voice. You have sung it nicely. Actually was wandering along on the net looking for lyrics of K.L.Saigals songs and bumped into your blog! Thanks!

Nilesh

P.S. Any idea where I can get the lyrics. I don't see a dedicated site where I can find them.
