Pramadavanam-Tribute To Ravindran-Part-I

This is the first of a series of songs that I will be posting here as part of my tribute to one of the greatest composers of Malayalam Cinema, the late Ravindran Master. His songs range from heavy classics like, Goopaangane, Pramadavanam, Harimuraleeravam, Kalabham Tharam, Sreelavasantham, etc. to folk based songs like Manjakkiliyude, Pularepoonthoniyil, ghazals like Vidatharu, Nirangale paadu and fast numbers like Vaa vaa Manoranjini, sombre melancholy & romantic numbers like, Vishada Naugayil, Etho Nidrathan, Azhage Nin...He did every type of songs in his lifetime. He also introduced new singers like Biju Narayanan, Gayatri, Asha Menon, myself...to name a few. Some of his songs were so tough to sing that even celebrity singers avoided them at programs. He was the only one after G. Devarajan and V. Dakshinamoorthy to take maximum use of the heavenly voice & awesome range of singing colossus K.J Yesudas. This was only because Ravindran too was an awesome trained singer like Dakshinaamoorthy & Devarajan! In fact he first started his career as a singer. Then he switched on to dubbing, and later it was K.J.Yesudas who helped him to start as a music director in "Choola" his first film. "Vadakkumnathan" was his last film.
This tribute will continue till I exhaust my collection of good karaoke songs of Ravindran.
Since I have already posted some songs, I will just mention about them in between.
I begin with a terrific tongue twister "Pramadavanam" which I believe as one of the best songs of Ravindran. Be warned, it is also not for the yellow livered! I never had the guts to sing it in front of Ravindran master as did other reputed singers. This is a very very difficult song to sing and the whole of Yesudas's depth in voice, range, control, modulation, knowledge of classical music, flow of voice, flow of sangathis comes to the fore-front! This easily is the toughest song to sing composed for malayalam cinema after Kaattile Paalmulam. Harimuraleeravam stands next. But the biggest enigma of all is that when this song was there in "His Highness Abdulla" and should have easily got both Yesudas & Ravindran the National awards, M.G Sreekumar walked away with the the award for "Naadaroopini" in the same film! It still remains a mystery as do many ways of Malayalam Cinema Music.
As I mentioned earlier, this is my first attempt at "Pramadavanam" as a mark of respect to my mentor in Malayalam Cinema music. Pleae do keep in mind that what I am trying to do when singing such classical numbers is not blindly imitate the song by singing sangathi for sangathi but try to give new expressions without trying to lose the original mood of the song. As I know Ravindran master, he used to give full freedom to the singer after giving his version of sangathis. If the singer came up with a good or better expression he would keep it. So I follow his tradition. He was never rigid as some other Music Directors. Maybe that's why we have had such terrific songs rendered by Dasettan!

Although the rendition overall has a good feel, I think some of the brighas are not true to the original. for e.g. ennnnn I believe you have improvised. looking fwd to the other songs of Ravindran from you.

Wow, Pradip. I heard this song for the first time, 7-8 years ago and I used to wonder how anyone can compose such a great song. There were occasions when I woke up from sleep to listen to this song. Call me crazy, but I have done that. Say a few hundred times!! One funny thing is I don't even understand what the song is all about. You have maintained the beauty of the song. Very very impressive performance.

PS:
1) Can you add "Keep-this-song-in loop" feature to your blog?

2) You have misspelt the title of this song.

Thanks Anup & Aravind...
Anup..I do not have the track of goopaangane....will try to get it...
Aravind....The mis-spelt word has been corrected...hey in this player it's not possible to keep a single song in loop. Do you have any other ideas?????

Murali.....Listen to that again please....Regards to the second ennnn....I have it right. But regarding the first one....had to cut short it as there is a beat short in the rhythm there, so cannot complete the talavattom.....tried to take the beat from the second part and paste it in the first....but would not sync so had to do it this way.....You must have also seen that at many places in the karaoke there are missing beats....so had a tough time....regarding the other sangathis...I have not tried to blindly imitate sangathi for sangathi as it's a classical based song....and I have taken liberties to give my own expression but without trying to entirely change the mood of the brighas..... Even the original singer never could sing the same sangathis again.....! So who am I?????? In such songs most of the sangathis the singers sing are spontaneous and cannot be replicated totally by others or even themselves later.Just take the case of Harimuraleeravam. I have not heard a single singer sing the song exactly as it was sung in the original including K.J.Y himself. Just like in football you say..."the hand of god"....at the time of recording some inner or invisible force makes you do the very impossible...which happens for just once...

This actually makes me always to be on guard....:-)Keeps me always on my toes....so please do continue with pointing out even the minute details....yes i am a perfectionist (in music)like you....so cannot rest until I do it the best way i can(within my limits of course...)

Indeed a tough song to sing!

Good job with the vocals. Do I sense a break in voice in the 1st charanam (probably last but one line)

Also, does the K-track jump or is it my ageing ears?? (-;

Also-- a suggestion

I know this is tough song on one's breath, but sustaining the ends might have given it a better feel. My 2c

You are very welcome. I understand ur points on improvisations. I guess it is not easy for me to hold back my comments including criticizing myself. Somehow the critic in me seems mostly disjointed from the the performer / friend that I am.

Looks like I seem to be yearning for perfection from everybody ..may be a wishful thinking. I tend to be overlooking the fact abt improvs and karaoke limitations. Will incl those factors also while listeing to the renditions. Thanks for the clarification.

Pradip-ji I heard ur ‘Pramadavanam’, it’s quite difficult but you still have presented with such ease that maintains the sweetness of the notes and expression, you have not gotten lost in the song but have enjoyed it while singing and let others feel it also…I do believe that one can sing the same song with totally different view, the inflection, emotions and understanding the meaning can make the difference…I would love to listen to one of ‘Hari-ji’s’ Ghazals from you…

Pradipji

This is one tough song to sing
and you have sung it very well.
My question is does the song needs so much vibrato ?

Dear Meera,

Please hear the original song alongside my version first.
1)Like murali please be specific about the points.
Being vague will not help me in correcting the problems if any:-)
Clearly mention where you want the sustains."at the ends is not a
correct usage" as there are many ends...I have indeed sustained where
ever necessary like at pramadavanam veendum....choodi....poole....in
pallavi, njaan...in the charanams...these are the only places where
sustain is there in original song. So I do want to know where more
should I do so. Or is it at innithaa....??? But here also I.M.H.O I do
not have any much more time to sustain as the mirdangam beat stops and
again starts immediately. So have to stop abruptly as is in the
original version...Then where??????
2) Also please mention the exact place where you observed the break in
voice...Was that for aniyumbol??? before innithaa in the first charanam?
3) Regarding jumps in the track your ears are not lying and aged,
Meera....they are very sharp....In fact you and murali have the
sharpest ears...which is a blessing for me! Yes indeed there are jumps
at many places which made me work harder and improvise at mny
places...Cannot help that. Just as in the Kannale track you sent me:-)

Will work on those points you suggested....but please explain my
query....fast??? And also do keep on suggesting improvements without
any remorse.....:-)

I am sorry I wasn't more specific Pradip. I shall listen to it once more with reference to the voice break and let you know .

As to the sustains, I was referring to the stops at each and every line whereby the sustains (meaning softening/toning the voice down a little bit ) would have sounded better if you know what I am trying to say here. I do understand the stops being goverened by the beat cycle, but then ofcourse this is my personal opinion and is just a suggestion! My ears somehow interestingly felt a few sharp stops which I perceive as a possibility of non-sustenance and I don't mean the line "kaviyudae gaana....innithaa. I remember hearing it somewhere else, but I shall get back to you on this too.

This brings us to one more thing :
I usually don't compare songs sung by anyone to the original (as in note to note) since there're bound to be differences, and those differences in most if not all songs is what I appreciate the most (-:

So let me listen to it once more & shall mail u with regards to that by this evening.

Thanks for being so serious enough about comments and taking the pains to correct it.

Cheers,
/Meera

Pradip:

Here're my thoughts and pointers on Pramadhavanam

Stops:

1. The abrupt stops I was talking about is the 1st initial alaap. Almost all lines in that set if you notice stops short when it could have been extended more ( meaning there's still time in my opinion). Also let me reiterate that this is only a personal view/preference. So-- just an observation!
2. Pallavi is totally OK. Sounds very impressive, nice emotions.
3. Also- the last Thelidheepham kalinizhalil... the ennn part, is it slightly different?
Let me reason why I say that: your 1st 2 sets of En's ( in the pallavi) seemed to be totally etched out. What I mean by etched is to be able to hear each and every note, gamakam personified there. Somehow the last one wasn't that etched. Again--unsure if it was intentional. So please don't mistake me (-:

Break:

1. The break wasn't in your voice but rather my headphone jack which I incidentally found out when I heard the song twice. The voice break came the 1st time around and not the 2nd time, so got the idea to hold down the jack still and listened. No voice breaks-- sorry to have jumped to pointing out that last time I heard this.

Cheers,
/Meera

Meera, I have tried to improve taking both your suggestions into account.

1) I have removed the keyboard backing for the alaap and have substituted it with original tanpura sample to make it a little longer. So I have extended all the stops as u suggested and have had more time for that. But I cannot sing the alaap differently without the pieces and stops as this is a very well known song on the lips of everyone....especially the alaap..So that alaap is best left as it is...
2) I have tinkered on the second enn...so that that the frequencies are more pronounced now.

So that takes care of both the suggestions....
Regarding the third one.....I have one counter.....suggestion

Time to change yiour headphone gear!!!! :-)

Once again thank you Meera and Murali for relentlessly pushing me to the limits (Sometimes....there is a limit too....for everyone) without remorse.....You have the license...to kill....

Wow! is not the word Pradip. This is one of my favorite songs. I once went to a KJY show in Madras ( Mal.). He sang this and a few other songs you have mentioned.

I saw people around me weep. My love affair with Mal. songs were 99% KJY + the Classical element present in the Mal. film songs.

Like you have mentioned it is a toug song indeed. You've done a fantastic job Pradip, as usual. Kudos.!!

How about 'Rama Katha' song? That's another classic KJY song.
